- Why Mijas?
Within 18 minutes from Malaga airport you can reach the picturesque pueblo blanco (white village), Mijas. A small mountain village with narrow streets, white houses and blue flower pots. Because it is 430 meters above sea level, you have an impressive panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea and its surrounding cities.
Because of the “lovely” charisma of this village, Mijas is an attraction in itself. When you use the electric tuk tuk, it will take you past all the monuments and tourist attractions.
Highly recommended is the botanical garden La Muralla. This garden has various flora & fauna and a beautiful view over the coast. This garden is free to visit.
The Ermita Virgen de la Peña is a chapel for the patron saint of Mijas. The hermitage is carved from a rock of the mountain. The construction took no less than 26 years.
3. Culinary delights
In Mijas village you can find several restaurants and cafes. Whether you like the Spanish cuisine or more of the Asian cuisine, there is plenty of choice.
Bar Alarcon is a restaurant where we come regularly. You can sit inside among the locals or on the roof terrace and enjoy the best homemade sangría in the whole country. Here they serve traditional tapas and very tasty wines.
Do you like wine? Then the Museo del Vino is a real must. Located in a house from 1839 which has a charming Andalusian patio, where you can do a wine tasting, including matching tapas. The à la carte menu is not very extensive. The wine list of course is!
For an oven-fresh pizza, we recommend La Cucina Di Nico. You can eat outside on the terrace or inside. Smooth service in this small piece of Italy in Spain.
Mijas is a busy tourist village. It can be reached by car, cab or bus. It is accessible for young and old. Despite the fact that the village has elevators, it is not always easy to pass through the narrow and bumpy streets. There are several restaurants where you can dine with your family and numerous ice cream salons. Here you don’t really find a vibrant nightlife, this means that midnight it is nice and quiet here.
As we mentioned above, there is not much to experience at night in Mijas village. You will have to go to one of the larger cities like Fuengirola or Málaga for the clubs. Of course there are several cafes. Aroma Café & Secret Garden serves tropical cocktails on the terrace and in the “secret” garden.
Mijas village has a number of supermarkets and banks. In the many souvenir stores in the village you can find mainly leather articles, jewelry and ceramics. However, the larger shopping centers with international brands are located a bit further away in Benalmádena or Fuengirola.
7. Sports & Leisure
Of course you can make beautiful walks in and around Mijas Pueblo. Horseback riding in the mountains is also a nice way to see the surroundings.
At less than 10 minutes you will find one of the most beautiful golf courses of the Costa del Sol: Alhaurín Golf.
Guinda Wellness & Spa is located in the center of Mijas. Here you can completely unwind with a hot stone massage or a mud pack.
8. Beaches & Beach Clubs
If you would like to enjoy the beach, you have to descend to the coastline. At 15 minutes you are in Fuengirola and you can go to Playa de Los Boliches for sunbathing.
