Large international community in Mijas

“New people are coming to live in Mijas all the time and our population has exceeded 90,000 for the first time ever,” said the mayor, Josele González, a few days ago. In the past 12 months, Mijas’ registered population has grown by more than 2,200 to a total of 91,154.

He attributes this to the quality of services and the friendliness of the locals. In doing so, he says the popularity is a sign of a healthy congregation.

Remarkably, there are now people of 127 different nationalities registered in the population register and the British community is again the largest with almost 10,000 inhabitants. Which makes Mijas the first place in Andalusia with such a large number of British.

Next on the list in terms of the number of foreign residents are Norwegians, with 2,886, and Sweden, with 900.

In total, there are 60,854 Spanish residents registered in the population register and more than 30,000 non-Hispanic residents. In other words, the international community now makes up one-third of the population in Mijas.

Mijas is diverse

The area of Mijas, located in the municipality of Malaga, is steeped in a long Spanish history with Mijas pueblo known for its strong stand when besieged by the Moors.

Mijas is booming

Mijas is located between Fuengirola and Marbella. It is clearly quieter than both cities and therein lies the potential. The area will become more and more popular which will make the area even more attractive. For example, hotel La Zambra is planning to open in June 2022 and has already been put in the list of ‘most exciting openings’ by Forbes.

“The legendary Byblos hotel first opened in 1984 and will be reborn in the spring as La Zambra, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt,” writes Forbes.

After its complete transformation, provided by Majorcan architecture studio Esteva i Esteva, have 197 rooms; three pools; and a wellness center. The hotel is located near two 18-hole golf courses.

Byblos has been closed since 2015. The reopening of La Zambra will create at least 200 new jobs in Mijas.

Joost Kruissen, general manager of La Zambra, says: “We are very proud to have appeared so early in Forbes magazine’s list of Europe’s most exciting new hotels in 2022. It’s a very ambitious project; the rebirth of an iconic hotel the old Byblos, symbolizing the hedonistic luxury of the 80s and 90s, with a great history as the preferred accommodation for royalty and the elite at the end of the 20th century.”

La Zambra features 197 rooms, restaurants, a wellness center and spa, recreational areas and a private room for meetings and events.

Previous guests have included Princess Diana, the Rolling Stones, Antonio Banderas and the Saudi royal family.
